# Record a gift or pledge.

POST https://api.awardspring.com/api/v1/gifts
Content-Type: application/json

Gifts may also carry soft credits, which acknowledge someone other than the giver.
Send `dry_run` to validate the request without saving it, and an
`Idempotency-Key` header so a retry cannot record the same gift twice.

Reference: https://docs.awardspring.com/api-reference/gifts/create

## Authentication

- `X-Spring-API-Key` header (required) — Secret API key issued per institution. Send it on every request.

## Servers

- `https://api.awardspring.com` (UnitedStates, default)
- `https://api.awardspring.ca` (Canada)

## Request

### Body (application/json)

This endpoint expects a CreateGiftV1Request.

- `donor_id` (string, required, nullable) — The stored ID of the donor (or donor organization) the gift is attributed to. Required.
- `amount` (double, required, nullable) — Monetary amount. Required for both gifts and pledges and must be greater than zero; a zero amount is allowed only when GiftType is `InKind`.
- `subject` (string, required, nullable) — Short human-readable title. Required, non-whitespace.
- `gift_date` (string, required, nullable) — ISO 8601 date the gift/pledge occurred (e.g. `"2026-04-03"` or `"2026-04-03T10:00:00Z"`). Required. Interpreted in the tenant's time zone and persisted in UTC.
- `type` (enum, optional, nullable) — `gift` or `pledge`. Defaults to `gift` when omitted. Soft credits are only honored on gifts.
  - Allowed values: `gift`, `pledge`
- `gift_type` (enum, optional, nullable) — Gift instrument — one of `Cash`, `Check`, `CreditOrDebit`, `BankTransfer`, `StockOrProperty`, `InKind`, `PayrollDeduction`, `Online`, `Other`. Optional; defaults to `None`. Ignored for pledges.
  - Allowed values: `Cash`, `Check`, `CreditOrDebit`, `BankTransfer`, `StockOrProperty`, `InKind`, `PayrollDeduction`, `Online`, `Other`
- `description` (string, optional, nullable)
- `fund_id` (string, optional, nullable) — Fund the gift is directed toward. When the tenant has Funds Management enabled the value must match an existing fund's identifier; otherwise it is stored as a free-form label.
- `campaign_id` (string, optional, nullable) — The stored ID of a campaign at this institution to attribute the gift to. Optional.
- `is_completed` (boolean, optional) — Only meaningful for pledges — marks the pledge fulfilled. Ignored for gifts.
- `assigned_to_user_id` (string, optional, nullable) — The stored ID of the officer the record is assigned to. Must be a person at this institution when supplied.
- `soft_credits` (list of SoftCreditV1Input, optional, nullable) — Up to three soft-credit recipients. Honored on gifts only; ignored for pledges.

## Response

### 201

Created

- `object` (string, optional, nullable) — Stripe-style resource discriminator. Stable, snake_case string naming the resource type. Serialized first so it reads as the leading field of every V1 resource body.
- `id` (string, optional, nullable) — The gift's or pledge's stored ID: 9 characters, sent exactly as stored. A dry-run create returns `null`, because nothing was saved.
- `donor_id` (string, optional, nullable) — The stored ID of the donor the gift or pledge is attributed to.
- `type` (string, optional, nullable)
- `gift_type` (string, optional, nullable)
- `amount` (double, optional, nullable)
- `subject` (string, optional, nullable)
- `description` (string, optional, nullable)
- `fund_id` (string, optional, nullable) — The school's own code for the fund the gift is directed toward, as plain text.
- `campaign_id` (string, optional, nullable) — The stored ID of the campaign the gift or pledge belongs to, or `null`.
- `is_completed` (boolean, optional)
- `gift_acknowledgement_sent` (boolean, optional)
- `date` (integer, optional)
- `soft_credits` (list of SoftCreditV1, optional, nullable)

## Errors

### 400 Bad Request Error

Bad Request

- `error` (V1ErrorBody, optional) — Stripe-shaped error object for the `/api/v1/*` surface. Serialized snake\_case (via V1SnakeCaseNamingStrategy) and always nested under the `error` key of a V1ErrorEnvelope: `{ "error": { "type": "...", "code": "...", "message": "...", "param": null, "doc_url": null, "recovery": "..." } }`

### 404 Not Found Error

Not Found

- `error` (V1ErrorBody, optional) — Stripe-shaped error object for the `/api/v1/*` surface. Serialized snake\_case (via V1SnakeCaseNamingStrategy) and always nested under the `error` key of a V1ErrorEnvelope: `{ "error": { "type": "...", "code": "...", "message": "...", "param": null, "doc_url": null, "recovery": "..." } }`

### 409 Conflict Error

Conflict

- `error` (V1ErrorBody, optional) — Stripe-shaped error object for the `/api/v1/*` surface. Serialized snake\_case (via V1SnakeCaseNamingStrategy) and always nested under the `error` key of a V1ErrorEnvelope: `{ "error": { "type": "...", "code": "...", "message": "...", "param": null, "doc_url": null, "recovery": "..." } }`

### 422 Unprocessable Entity Error

Unprocessable Content

- `error` (V1ErrorBody, optional) — Stripe-shaped error object for the `/api/v1/*` surface. Serialized snake\_case (via V1SnakeCaseNamingStrategy) and always nested under the `error` key of a V1ErrorEnvelope: `{ "error": { "type": "...", "code": "...", "message": "...", "param": null, "doc_url": null, "recovery": "..." } }`

### 429 Too Many Requests Error

Rate limit exceeded for this API key. Retry after the interval in the `Retry-After` header.

- `error` (V1ErrorBody, optional) — Stripe-shaped error object for the `/api/v1/*` surface. Serialized snake\_case (via V1SnakeCaseNamingStrategy) and always nested under the `error` key of a V1ErrorEnvelope: `{ "error": { "type": "...", "code": "...", "message": "...", "param": null, "doc_url": null, "recovery": "..." } }`

## Types

### SoftCreditV1Input

A single soft-credit recipient on a gift. Supply either UserId (the stored ID of an existing person at this institution) or a free-form Name. When both are given, the user ID wins and the name is dropped — mirroring the internal gift-entry flow.

- `name` (string, optional, nullable)
- `user_id` (string, optional, nullable)

### SoftCreditV1

- `name` (string, optional, nullable)
- `user_id` (string, optional, nullable) — The stored ID of the person credited, or `null` for a name-only credit.

### V1ErrorBody

Stripe-shaped error object for the `/api/v1/*` surface. Serialized snake\_case (via V1SnakeCaseNamingStrategy) and always nested under the `error` key of a V1ErrorEnvelope: `{ "error": { "type": "...", "code": "...", "message": "...", "param": null, "doc_url": null, "recovery": "..." } }`

- `type` (string, optional, nullable) — Coarse error category from V1ErrorType (e.g. `invalid_request_error`).
- `code` (string, optional, nullable) — Stable fine-grained machine code from ErrorCode (e.g. `donor_not_found`).
- `message` (string, optional, nullable) — Human-readable summary safe to surface to the caller.
- `param` (string, optional, nullable) — The request parameter the error relates to, when attributable to a single field; otherwise null.
- `doc_url` (string, optional, nullable) — Link to documentation for this error, when one exists; otherwise null.
- `recovery` (string, optional, nullable) — Plain-language guidance on how to recover from this error, suitable for showing to the person who triggered it. Not present on every error.
- `details` (any, optional) — Optional structured payload (e.g. a list of ValidationDetail for validation failures). Omitted from the wire when null so the canonical Stripe shape stays minimal.
